GL Golf on PowerPC Macs

Apple’s recent development tool package, XCode 4, removes support for PowerPC Macs. While GL Golf will eventually become an Intel only product, we have considered delaying the transition if enough users are still using PowerPC computers. Please let us know through the poll below

  1. I have a G4 and will not be upgrading anytime soon, but do plan to have an ipad. You gotta do what you gotta do, and if it means abandoning power PC, so be it.

  2. Why not update the game to use both intel and powerpc?
When it loads, put in a command that detects the system type, if powerpc then run the old scripts, vice versa.

If this isn’t possible, could you keep a separate file for power-pc users and still update that with new courses?

    1. Right now that is essentially what it is doing, but XCode 4 no longer supports making any versions for PowerPC. I may have to use an old copy of XCode to generate a Power PC version

  3. Jake,

I have truly enjoyed each upgrade over the past several years. Thanks for each and every one! You have a great golf program no matter what. My understanding is that I will continue to be able to play. But, will not be able to get any upgrades soon. Is this correct? I am on an old IBook G4. Again, Great work!

    Dave

    1. Once PowerPC support is dropped your iBook will be stuck at the latest version, but it looks like there are probably enough people using PowerPC computers that I’ll download XCode3 again and use it for at least a year or so. Glad you’re enjoying the game!

  4. I’m a long way from buying an Intel Mac. I’ve maintained Duel Bootable Macs running both OS 3 and OS X. Apple does not honor the backwards compatibility that it once historically did. It would at least be good of them to do this in OS X at least as far as 10.4.11, and encourage the software developers to do the same. Just my opinion.

  5. the GL GOLF game box on lower left hand side of the courses has suddenly appeared on my IMAC when i was playing around with the Graphics bar on GL GOLF. the problem appeared after downloading LEOPARD OS X which is 64 bit codec. NO VIRUSES occur !!! thanks Jake. maybe Nuclear Nova could do both Intel and Power Pc.

  6. I’ve got a 1 yr. old mac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 10.6.6 Snow Leopard is this compatible with XCode 4 ?

  7. Apple has a long history of “cut-offs”…. i.e. dropping components and technologies as they innovate. Power PC’s are, unfortunately, destined for obsolescence in the near future. We might as well “bite the bullet” and take the inevitable step now so as not to deliberately design a program knowing it will be useful for only a short time. I commiserate with “those to be left behind”, because I have been such a victim more than once!

  8. It makes more sense if you make code for both versions, since millions of Power PC’s are still installed and are rock solid.

Giving in, to only serve Steve ‘used car salesman’ Job’s, and his “problematic Intel series computers, will be a bad choice by you.

I have a number of Mac computers and the only one’s that have chronic problems are Intel based.

I’m sure Apple will continue to make their billions on the latest fad or gimmick, until the public realizes that they don’t really have to keep up with the Jones’s.

  9. I use a PowerPC G5 orientated Mac and have no plans to change to an Intel machine unless I’m forced to.
Also, fortunately for me PowerPC’s don’t seem to suffer from, so called computer viruses, so I shall continue using my reliable PowerPC G5 for as long as possible.

  10. Looks like far too many people are using PowerPC, I’ll keep GL Golf compatible for as long as possible! Thanks for the feedback everyone

  11. Jake, Please devote your programming skills to the NEW XCODE4.

I am looking forward to seeing your new versions of GL golf soon especially when the Mac OS 10.7 is released.

I have a plethora of legacy Power PC’s and pre-Power PC’s as well as the current crop of iMac intel’s.

Personally i have found that the software i use and require “forces” me to upgrade my Mac hardware. Not that there is anything wrong with the “legacy” hardware and software.

  12. I have a Mac 10.4.11 and love it but I also love playing the golf games and the tournaments. I hope I can continue to enjoy the games a little longer.

  13. Many other applications that I use have gone to XCODE4. They no longer develop improvements other than fixing bugs for their older versions. Some I have upgraded and some I have not.

My opinion is if a substantial number (>15%) of your clients use PowerPC only, you should continue to include them when you add new courses. I don’t know how large your family of players is, but it would be a shame to lose any of their competition in tournament play.

Even though I have only Intel based Macs, and “voted” as such, if the effort is not onerous, I would delay the transition.

  14. My husband assures me that on my Mac it doesn’t matter, Jake, so either way, it is not an issue for me. I feel rather bad for the folks that it does matter, though, especially if they have been strong supporters of GL Golf. If I were in that category, I would feel unhappy about it.

    Take care,
    Liz

  15. You have always been willing to help a client struggling with an upgrade issue or anything else. That’s another reason why I like GL Golf.

As another customer said, “you have to do what you have to do.” Good luck.

  16. I am disappointed that Apple has decided to screw us PowerPC owners, because as someone already said, there are probably millions of units around the world still giving good service. Please continue to support PowerPC as long as is possible.

  17. v2.3.2 from the about window say 2.3.1 and it seems this is the last version that will really open and work on Powermac G5 PPC running tiger 10.4.11, What a shame you will stop supporting us as we are paying customers too, aren’t we?

    1. While I was able to get GL Golf to build for PowerPC Macs, I was unable to get it to build for 10.4.x. If you upgrade your G5 to 10.5 Leopard you will be able to play the new versions of GL Golf. Sorry about this but it is now out of my hands with the way Apple is changing their developer tools to stop supporting older systems.

  18. Jake I have Leopard on another G5 with Tiger 10.4.11 as well. I have 2 unique HDs on that computer and I already realized 2.3.3 works on Leopard. You might want to find a way to stop Tiger 10.4.11 users from being about to update or post a very large warning on the updater window to stop PPC Tiger users from updating and state ( v2.3.2 but in the about window v2.3.1) is the very last working version. I know other Tiger users would appreciate this. Today when updating and on relaunch I got bouncing in the dock and crashing. Of course I figured it out though many others will not and luckily for me I had a backup 2.3.2. All is working fine on both Tiger and Leopard for me. I’ve been a registered user since this game was a baby and it only has improved over time.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion Chris, I just added that to the auto-update note and to the update email, hopefully anyone with 10.4.x will see one of those warnings

  19. Jake I just checked the update window and I see nothing about Tiger User Beware or any info related to not updating. Here is what I see only. You may want to take another look at it. Date checked 4-18-11

  21. Jake,

I have an old iBook G4 and accidently downloaded 2.33 (or is it 2.32?) and now nothing works. Can you somehow send me an old version that will still work on my Power PC?

    Thanks,
    Dave
